Lab User Agreement

The MechTech Laboratory and Mechanical Engineering Teaching Laboratory are two spaces open to all mechanical engineering students. In order to use these spaces, the following complete user agreement must be read and then agreed to here.

Overview

    • Students must complete Rascal Initial Lab Safety Training TC4951.

    • Do not use restricted equipment or equipment you are not trained on. Always seek training with lab staff.

    • We have a no-fault policy - please report any injury as well as any broken or missing equipment to lab staff.

    • Students are responsible for cleaning up the workstations. More details on cleanliness and storage expectations can be found here.

    • Any storage of materials or projects in either lab space must be put in a designated area if for a course, or must otherwise be expressly approved by lab staff.

    • Items of any kind (equipment, tools, electronics, etc.) must be signed out with lab staff to be taken out of the space

    • Any unlabeled materials must be cleared with lab staff before being used by students.

    • Students must treat lab staff, super users, work studies, and other users of the space with respect. There is a zero-tolerance policy on harassment and/or abuse of others.

    • Respect the lab space as if it were your own. Leave the space better than you found it and how you’d like it to be when you walk in to work.

    • MECE juniors and seniors, as well as MECE graduate students, may request swipe access to the teaching lab through the lab manager and MechTech through the MechTech lab technician (by filling out the form linked in the website header). Swipe access allows you to enter the general space only and does not include the staff office or machine shop. Students must provide justification for their need for swipe access. Unless enrolled in a MECE course, non-MECE students will not be granted swipe access - there are no exceptions to this

    • Students should only enter the lab space after hours via swipe access and should not prop the door to the lab space for others.

  • Lab staff and super users reserve the right to remove a student from a lab space if they fail to do any of the above or abuse the space and / or others in any way. For minor violations (such as lacking cleanliness, misuse of equipment or tools, failure to follow instructions from lab staff, etc.), a student may be asked to leave a lab space for the remainder of the day, and the violation will be noted internally. If the student has swipe access, this will also be revoked, and they will no longer be able to enter the space after hours. The staff also reserves the right to temporarily suspend the student from the space for a week (at the staff’s discretion) until the student has met with the lab manager and/or department chair to discuss the nature of the suspension and expectations for reinstatement and conduct moving forward.

For major violations (Title IX violations, disregard for safety protocol, breaking the University Code of Conduct, etc.) or multiple offenses, lab staff reserves the right to contact the student and let them know they have been barred from entering the space unless necessary for a course under strict supervision (i.e., if the student has a class in the space and is supervised by the professor, or has a project assigned that can only be completed in the space and is supervised by lab staff).
